Movable Type Finds New Home at Infocom

When SAY Media acquired Six Apart in November of last year, our newly combined company made a strong commitment to help publishers on all content management platforms optimize their websites and, ultimately, make more money. After much consideration, we determined that the most scalable way to realize this objective is to focus our efforts on the TypePad technology platform. SAY Media content and ad platforms are central to the development of a modern media company and TypePad is critical to that evolution. As part of this new strategic focus and our commitment to reinvigorate the TypePad business, SAY Media has agreed to sell Six Apart’s wholly owned Japanese subsidiary, Six Apart KK (“SAKK”), and with it the Movable Type (“MT”) publishing platform, to Japanese IT services company Infocom. There will be no change to Movable Type’s future development as a result of this transaction.

Under the terms of this agreement, SAY Media is selling 100% of SAKK shares to Infocom, as well as complete control and ownership of Movable Type intellectual property. In addition, Infocom and SAKK will now hold all rights to the Six Apart name. As Movable Type has been developed by SAKK for the last few years, including the entire MT 5.0 version, the deal will have no effect on the day-to-day operations of Movable Type. Furthermore, Movable Type Open Source (“MTOS”) will remain publicly available as part of the Infocom suite of products and services. With the recent formation of a number of companies to help support MTOS as well as SAKK’s continued investment in MT as part of Infocom, Movable Type has never been better positioned for growth.

At SAY Media, we recognize the need for dedicated resources to grow key segments of any business. That is why we appointed Jeff Reine to General Manager of TypePad, and that is also why we are confident that Movable Type has found a strong home in Infocom. We look forward to watching both technologies flourish in the months and years to come. For more information on the acquisition of SAKK and Movable Type by Infocom click here.

Movable Type leaves the SAY Media nest: "...I wonder how Six Apart founders Ben and Mena Trott feel about their once-flagship product and self-named company (their birthdays are six days apart) finally being out of their hands...."
